About Us

Damaris Pittman, LM, CPM

I have been involved in midwifery for 12 years, since the birth of my second son at home. I attended Maternidad La Luz midwifery school in El Paso, TX and in 1993 received my license to practice in South Carolina. In 1998 I received the credential of Certified Professional Midwife through the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM).

I have been married to Terry for 18 years and we have 2 sons, Christian and Elias. We live in Charlotte, NC, just a few minutes from the NC/SC border.

I believe that the innate ability to give birth naturally is in all women. I am dedicated to supporting women and their choices through education and informed consent. The decisions families make are deeply personal and must be made with care and responsibility. Building a bond of mutual trust and respect with your care providers is a necessary step in the process of safe and happy birth.

I ask my clients to make informed decisions, strive for optimal health and nutrition, and to honor my need to comply with South Carolina laws and regulations.

Deborah Sue Griffin, Doula, Licensed Apprentice

I have a degree in biology and worked for 20 years as the Education Director and Volunteer Coordinator for The Carolina Raptor Center doing environmental education. I believe that my intuitive nature helped me be successful in working with wildbirds and in coaxing extraordinary efforts from volunteers and is now benefiting my work with mothers in labor.

My husband, Steven, and I have been married for ten years. We are ecstatic about the recent addition of our beautiful daughter, Caitlin Kira, to our family. The other members of our houshold include Chelsea, the dog, and Cleo, the cat.

I began attending births, both in home and in hospitals, in 1998 and have attended a certification training workshop with the Association of Labor Assistants and Childbirth Educators (ALACE). I continue my education through attending workshops, conferences, extensive reading and currently am training as a midwifery apprentice.

I view pregnancy and birth as a fundamentally healthy process, with many normal variations, for which a woman’s body has an innate knowledge of and ability to perform. I consider each woman and each birth to be unique, requiring a unique and individual response. It is my goal as a doula to ensure my client’s awareness of all options available in the birthing community so they can make informed decisions regarding choices for their birth. My commitment to support my client’s choices reflects my belief that the birth experience belongs to the family, not to the birth attendant, nor any other member of the birth team.

It is my goal to help women yield to the power of labor and develop their own style and response to it, rather than resisting labor, by providing emotional and physical support, and an understanding of the physiology of birth.
