Midwifery and Doula Services

Pregnancy and birth are life-altering events for women and their families. It is also a time for many choices and decisions. The opportunities for learning and growth are an exciting part of the experience.

At Birth Choice Midwifery and Doula Services, we believe that birth is a healthy, normal process, and that women’s bodies are created with the capability to safely sustain pregnancy, to give birth, and to breastfeed their babies, with little or no intervention from others.

We also believe that women who educate themselves about their options for birth, who are allowed to choose their birth environment and birth attendants, and who are supported in their choices have the most positive experiences.

The growing movement toward consumer choices and individual responsibility is very evident in today's variety of birth options. Whether you choose to give birth at home with a midwife or to give birth in a hospital with a doctor, Birth Choice can assist.

For women who choose to give birth in the privacy of their own homes, we are licensed in South Carolina to provide Homebirth Midwifery Services.

For women who choose a hospital or birth center birth, Doula Services are offered in North and South Carolina. Recent controlled trials involving over a thousand women demonstrate that the presence of a doula results in:

  • 50% decrease in cesarean sections
  • 25% decrease in length of labor
  • 30% decrease in use of forceps
  • 40% decrease in use of oxytocin
  • 60% decrease in use of epidurals
  • 30% decrease in pain medications (narcotics)

In addition, long-term benefits of labor support include:

  • Improved breastfeeding
  • Decreased postpartum depression
  • Greater maternal satisfaction

“A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform. A woman knows that nothing can be born without darkness and nothing can come to fruition without light.” ~ Diane Mariechild
